What is music:
Music is a set of sounds and silences, organized in a logical way, which is governed by a series of laws such as harmony, rhythm and melody, making use of the sensitivity that characterizes the human being with respect to emotion and perception of artistic elements.
This term comes from the Greek word “μουσική” (mousikē), which can be translated as “the art of the muses”. Certainly, music has a mostly spiritual and emotional connotation, so its complexity has only increased throughout history, because it has not been able to define what it really represents, beyond the current use that is given.
In times of Ancient Greece, it was considered that music could not exist without the company of poetry (or lyrics) or dance, as it was quite common for women who fulfilled these functions to be invited at celebrations organized by senior officials. Seeing that there was an important harmony between the three disciplines, the belief that they were created so that one accompanied another was imposed. However, in later times, this was declining and new conceptions about the art of music were introduced.
The music is traditionally arranged to generate pleasant sensations to those who hear it, that is, it has a rather remarkable aesthetic purpose; but this cannot be possible if all its elements are not united in a logical way. This is a characteristic that is maintained in diverse cultures, although the conventions under which the melodies are composed are not the same, so it can be said that, like all art, music is universal. At the cultural level, music can represent the history of an entire nation and its customs; it is one of the components of the common life of a society.
Some experts say that when producing music with instruments, new neurological connections can be developed that benefit the cognitive process and collaboration between both hemispheres would be much easier. This is because the concentration that must be had, added to the control of the extremities to control the instrument, means that several areas of the brain are used simultaneously.
It is known as music to the combination of rhythm, melody, and harmony, in a manner pleasing to the ears.
In the restrictive sense, music is the art of coordinating and transmitting sound effects, harmoniously, and aesthetically valid, being transmitted through the voice, and musical instruments.
Music is the artistic, cultural manifestation of a people. At the same time, it is the means by which an individual expresses his feelings. In this sense, music can be used as therapy (music therapy), through dance, music, and sound, because it allows the individual to release bad feelings, achieving an improvement in their communication, social integration, and individual expression.
In relation to the above, music for babies is beneficial because it favours the attention capacity and stimulates memory. Likewise, before sleeping, listening to music is advantageous since it helps the individual feel serene and relaxed, stabilizing the nervous, energetic and mental systems.
Music evolved through the centuries, generating a diversity of musical genres, such as classical, romantic, popular or folk, pop, sacred or religious, among others, and each musical genre has a set of subgenres and styles.
On the other hand, the musician is the individual who plays a musical instrument or composes music.
Finally, the word music is used in colloquial phrases such as:
- “Go with that music somewhere else”, indicates going to bother another person or another place.
- “Heavenly music”, nice thing to hear.
Classical music is characterized by its symmetry and sound balance. It is considered a pleasant and refined music, presented in instrumental form, which reached the top with the great geniuses such as Beethoven, Mozart, Haendel, Haydn, Bach, among others.
The expression “classical music” was used to represent the musical evolution of the twentieth century, known as the “golden age” of the great composers.
Popular music comprises a set of musical genres, being attractive to the masses, especially the young public.
Popular music is characterized by its brief duration, composed of brief sayings that allow to be memorized easily, as well as its catchy rhythms and refrains. Popular music is tradable, and accessible, some of the genres that comprise popular music are: romantic music, pop music, rock and roll, among others.
Sacred or religious music is noted for relating a biblical passage, psalms, or songs that highlight Christian values or virtues, as well as those that are sung to God.
In principle, sacred music was used in the Christian religion, but it can be extended to other manifestations of religious music, such as Arabic, Jewish, Indian, and so on.
Traditional or folk music is that which represents the traditions and customs of a people, which are transmitted from generation to generation, as part of the values and identity of a people.
Folk music has lyrics that are easy to memorize, and are linked to festivities, being accompanied by typical dances of a certain culture. In this sense, folk music is intimately related to popular music, for example: the popular music of Mexico, is mariachi and charros.
Electronic music is produced through electronic instruments, and electronic music technology. Electronic music is the most transmitted current in nightclubs and mass festivals.
